I saved my ass’: Chris Gotterup explains how his win bailed him out of a Mother’s Day disaster
While the eyes of the golf world were fixed firmly on Rory McIlroy’s runaway victory at Quail Hollow on Sunday, Chris Gotterup put on an equally dominant performance at the Myrtle Beach Classic, besting the field by six strokes en route to his first PGA Tour win. The former Jack Nicklaus Award winner was thankful for more than just his breakthrough, however. After the final round, Gotterup told reporters the win “saved my ass,” bailing him out of a potential Mother’s Day disaster. Check it out.
Apparently Gotterup ordered flowers for his mom, but amidst the chaos of the weekend, pulled the trigger a bit too late. The flowers weren’t scheduled to arrive until Monday, leaving Gotterup empty handed as his family arrived in Myrtle Beach to watch his final round. Luckily, Gotterup was able to deliver something even better than a bouquet.
Gotterup’s gift will keep giving as well. With the win, the 24-year-old earned a two-year exemption and played his way into the field for this week’s PGA Championship. If he manages a Michael Block-like run at Valhalla, mama Gotterup may never need flowers again.
