Big Names Miss the Cut at the 2024 PGA Championship

However, the tournament hasn’t been as favorable for several notable players, who failed to make it past the halfway mark. Here are seven of the most significant names to miss the cut at this year’s PGA Championship:

Tiger Woods (+7)

The four-time PGA Championship winner couldn’t recapture his past magic at Valhalla, where he triumphed 24 years ago. Given his recent injury struggles and limited play, this outcome wasn’t entirely unexpected. Woods’ opening round of 72 gave some hope, but a second round marred by two triple bogeys sealed his fate. On a positive note, Woods appeared to move freely and will focus on preparing for the US Open, where he has received a special exemption.

Wyndham Clark (+4)

The 2023 US Open champion missed the cut for the second consecutive Major, following a similar disappointment at The Masters. After an even-par 71 in the first round, Clark faltered with a second-round 75, which included five bogeys and a double bogey, leaving him five shots off the projected cut line.

Phil Mickelson (+4)

Three years after becoming the oldest Major winner with his second PGA Championship victory, Mickelson failed to make the cut. Despite regular play with LIV Golf, Mickelson has struggled in 2024, and his rounds of 74 and 72 at Valhalla were not enough to advance.

Adam Scott (+3)

The Australian, who has twice finished third at the PGA Championship, continued his recent struggles. Despite a consistent first round with only one bogey, Scott’s performance deteriorated on Friday, leading to a total score of three over, four shots away from the cut line.

Michael Block (+7)

The club pro who captured hearts with his T15 finish and hole-in-one at the 2023 PGA Championship couldn’t replicate his heroics this year. Block’s rounds of 76 and 73 left him seven over for the tournament, matching Tiger Woods’ score.

Sam Burns (+3)

Despite five PGA Tour wins and a 2023 Ryder Cup appearance, Burns has yet to make a significant impact at Majors. His rounds of 72 and 73 at Valhalla resulted in a three-over finish, leaving him to reflect on how to improve his performance in the sport’s biggest events.

Sepp Straka (+2)

The Austrian’s effort to make the cut fell short in the fading light of Friday. Despite a strong push, a bogey on the final hole left him two over for the tournament, missing the cut.

Additional Notables

Play was delayed for over an hour on Friday, leaving several big names in limbo until Saturday. Among those on the edge are Jon Rahm, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Ludvig Aberg, all at even par, just below the projected cut line. Other players missing the cut include LIV golfer David Puig, who participated via a special invite, and Chris Gotterup, the Myrtle Beach Classic winner.

As the tournament progresses into the weekend, the absence of these notable players will undoubtedly be felt, but the fierce competition among those remaining promises an exciting battle for the Wanamaker Trophy.
