Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson both missed the cut Friday at the 2024 PGA Championship. But it was Mickelson who missed out on a chance to break a record.
When the six-time major champion tied for 58th place last year at Oak Hill, he tied Jack Nicklaus and Raymond Floyd as players who have made 27 cuts in the PGA Championship. Mickelson opened with 74 Thursday and followed it with a one-over 72. His four-over-par total missed by five shots.
When the second round finally finished on Saturday morning, after the 18 players who were on the course when play was suspended for darkness at 8:41 p.m. Friday completed play, the cut officially fell at one-under-par 141, the lowest ever in PGA Championship history. Xander Schauffele leads at 12 under par, one shot ahead of Collin Morikawa. Scottie Scheffler is three behind.
Woods closed the first round with consecutive bogeys to shoot 72 then got off to a miserable start in Round 2. After par on the first hole, he played the next three holes in seven over par—going triple bogey, bogey, triple bogey. At that point, with 14 holes remaining, his hopes of making the cut were dashed. He shot 77 and missed the cut by eight.

“Just kept making mistakes and thing you can’t do, not just in tournaments but in majors especially,” Woods said. “And I just kept making them. I hung around for most of the day but unfortunately the damage was done early.”
Woods hasn’t made the cut in the PGA Championship since 2020. He did not play in 2021 and 2023 and withdrew in 2022.
Jon Rahm shot 70-72 and missed the cut by a shot. It’s the first cut he’s missed in a major championship since the 2019 PGA Championship. He tied for 45th place at the Masters last month and has not won a tournament this year with LIV Golf but has finished inside the top 10 there in all seven events.
Other notables missing the cut: Ludvig Aberg (72-70, missed by one), Wyndham Clark (71-75, missed by five) and Michael Block (76-74, missed by eight).
