PGA Championship 2024 tee times: Sunday’s Round 4 pairings at Valhalla

PGA Championship 2024 tee times: Sunday’s Round 4 pairings at Valhalla

Valhalla Golf Club has produced plenty of final-round drama the three previous times it has hosted the PGA Championship, with playoff wins from Mark Brooks (1996) and Tiger Woods (2000) and a back-nine rally by Rory McIlroy (2014). And there’s no reason to think things will be any different this Sunday.

A bunched leaderboard and a soft scoreable course set up for a potentially frenetic final 18 holes with the Wanamaker Trophy on the line.

Tied for the lead and playing in the final twosome tee time on Sunday are Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele. Combined they have 20 top-10 finishes in 44 major starts, but Morikawa can boast two wins while Schauffele is desperately seeking his first. The duo sit at 15 under and one stroke clear of Sahith Theegala in third place.

But lurking just off the pace are major winners Shane Lowry and Bryson DeChambeau, both at 13 under, and Justin Rose at 12 under. Reigning FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland, in the hunt a year ago at the PGA at Oak Hill, is also at 13 under. And Louisville-area native Justin Thomas might seem a little ways back at 10 under, but recall when he won the second of his two PGA titles at Southern Hills in 2022, he started the final round seven back.

Thirteen players are within five shots of the leaders. And considering two 62s have been shot at Valhalla this week, the possibility of somebody coming out early and posting a low score to throw a wrench into the works is reasonable.

Given a difficult piece of land on which to create Valhalla (half the site was floodplain, with high-tension power poles), Jack Nicklaus drew on his training under Pete Dye and Desmond Muirhead to produce a unique design, with an alternate fairway par 5, a par 4 with an island green and an 18th green shaped like a horseshoe. Over the decades, Nicklaus returned periodically to update its challenges, and the club rebuilt bunkers and replaced its soft bent grass fairways with firmer, faster zoysia in 2022. Valhalla has proven to be a great championship site. It has hosted three thrilling PGA Championships, the latest Rory McIlroy’s win in 2014, and will host a fourth in 2024.
