Oliver Bearman has clapped back at Kevin Magnussen‘s recent remarks by confidently stating “I can look after myself”.
The young driver, 19, is in the running for the spot at Haas which will be vacated by Nico Hulkenburg at the end of the season. Magnussen, when quizzed about potentially mentoring Bearman, had sharply retorted: “I’m not really here to take care of young kids. I do that at home.”
The Dane, who is also of out contract this year but nearing a new deal, added: “So hopefully the guy we have in the car will be competent, professional and consistent like Nico has been, and we’ll see if I’ll be in the other car.”
Bearman, who turned heads with his stellar F1 debut for Ferrari when stepping in for an unwell Carlos Sainz in Saudi Arabia, has now addressed these comments made during the Miami Grand Prix, reports the Express.
“I don’t think he’d be looking after me, I can look after myself,” he asserted (via GPblog), acknowledging that a single impressive race doesn’t automatically secure him the Haas seat. “It’s true that I don’t just deserve to have the Haas seat which seems to be vacant because I did a good race in F1,” he added.
“I have to continually show that I deserve it, I have to work for it. That’s by doing, first of all, good performances in Formula 2, showing that I can fight at the front and contend for the championship. And of course my FP1 experiences with Haas, and I hope that I can show what I’m capable of and show why I deserve that seat.”
Reserve driver Bearman could potentially get his next F1 appearance earlier than scheduled, as Magnussen is only two penalty points short of a race ban. He’s ready and raring to go if called upon.
Kevin Magnussen wouldn’t take on a mentor role for Bearman if they become team-mates (
