Rory McIlroy’s wife has already removed her luxury engagement ring after filing for divorce from Rory McIlroy, but was still seen wearing her wedding ring on Wednesday.
It’s the first time that Erica Stoll has been seen publicly since news of their sudden divorce was announced on Tuesday, one day after legally filing for separation. Stoll’s engagement ring was valued at $650,000 (£512,500) when McIlroy got down on one knee in 2015, but after getting married they will end their relationship as husband and wife after seven years.
Stoll was attending a Pilates class in Jupiter, Florida, on Wednesday, and refused to comment when being approached by a Daily Mail reporter. She still had a band on her finger which was assumed to be her wedding ring, respecting their agreement until the divorce is completed.
It’s been a tough week for McIlroy as he gears up to play in the PGA Championship on Thursday, with his communications team asking for reporters to be respectful in Louisville, Kentucky. Despite the announcement, McIlroy claimed he is “ready to play this week” in the second major of the year, one he triumphed at back in 2014.
It’s been a mixture of emotions for McIlroy, as he won at the Wells Fargo Championship last weekend before preparing for the PGA Championship under tough personal circumstances. According to court documents that were filmed in Palm Beach County, their marriage is now ‘irretrievably broken’.
McIlroy and Stoll were married in 2017 and their daughter, Poppy Kennedy, arrived in 2020. They met at the Ryder Cup back in 2012, while she worked for the PGA who runs the competition.
At the time, McIlroy was dating tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, but their three-year relationship came to an end in May 2014. He was engaged to the Danish tennis star after popping the question on New Years Eve, 2013.
“The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails. I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had,” McIlroy said at the time.
Coincidentally, the announcement was made ahead of the PGA Championship but McIlroy refused to withdraw from the competition and put all of his focus into golf. “I just want to get my head into golf this week and concentrate on the tournament and try to do well. (I’ve) been playing well. The form’s been good,” McIlroy added in 2014.
“Just want to dive straight into it and keep myself somewhat busy and just try and have a good week on the course. I’m not going to lie. It’s going to be very difficult. But you know, at least when I get inside the ropes, (I can) just try and concentrate on the shot at hand.”
McIlroy ended up winning the competition despite breaking off his engagement with Wozniacki, and it remains the last major he’s won to this day. His relationship with Stoll started a year after that success, but once again McIlroy will be left with conflicting memories from a PGA Championship.
