Xander Schauffele admitted several PGA Tour stars poked fun at Scottie Scheffler following his dramatic arrest during the PGA Championship.
Earlier this month ahead of teeing off for his second round at the PGA Championship, Scheffler was arrested in a remarkable turn of events. He rushed and made it to his tee time, shooting 66 before falling away from contention with a 73 on Saturday as Schauffele secured his first major title.
During an appearance on GOLF Subpar this week, Schauffele – who is friends with Scheffler – explained his perspective of the remarkable turn of events seen at Valhalla. Naturally, the rest of the field decided to have some fun with the two-time Masters winner.
“The only thing he hurts is a golf ball and other competitors’ feelings most of the time,” Schauffele told Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz. “But that’s literally the extent of the damage Scottie Scheffler is capable of doing. He’s a solid guy all around. I thought it was a prank.”
Schauffele is in a group chat with physio Marnus Marais and Scheffler, along with other superstars like Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. Once the world No. 1 was released, the group immediately joked about what had gone down.

“It was a fun poke,” Schauffele added. “It wasn’t like a mean poke. It was fun. I mean, the mug shot was posted, you know, and then someone changed the name of the group chat, like, ‘Please make it tomorrow, Scottie,’ or something like that.
“We wanted to like be peaceful. And Scottie, when he’s with us, he’s so chill, you know, like, if our table makes fun of him, he’s fine,” Schauffele said. “But like, if someone else makes fun of him, we kind of look at him like, ‘You can’t say that.’”

Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, a felony, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic on May 17. Scheffler denies the charges following the incident prior to the second round of the PGA Championship. His arraignment is on June 3.
Scheffler said of the arrest: “The officer that took me to the jail was very kind, he was great. We had a nice chat in the car, that kind of helped calm me down. I was sitting there waiting to go in, and I asked him, I was like ‘Can you just come hang out with me for a few minutes so I can calm down?’
“This one older officer looked at me when I was doing my fingerprints and looks at me and goes ‘Do you want full experience today?’ I looked at him and go, ‘I don’t know how to answer that.’ He was like ‘Come on man, do you want a sandwich?’ I was like ‘sure, I’ll take a sandwich. I didn’t eat breakfast yet.’ They were really kind.”
