‘We talked’ Bryson DeChambeau responds to Rory McIlroy snub at US Open

LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau admits Rory McIlroy has finally offered his congratulations after their epic US Open battle last month.

Bryson DeChambeau has confirmed ‘everything is great’ between he and Rory McIlroy after the Northern Irishman stormed out of the US Open without immediately offering his congratulations to the 2024 US Open champion.

McIlroy, 35, missed two short putts on the closing holes to hand DeChambeau, 30, a second US Open title at Pinehurst No.2 last month.

The PGA Tour star was so frustrated by his finish that he did not hang about to congratulate DeChambeau or even speak with the media.

McIlroy then decided to take some time out of competitive action to get his head straight before competing at this week’s 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon.

In response to shunning the media and not congratulating DeChambeau after the US Open, McIlroy told the Guardian:

“Maybe the one drawback from me not talking [to media] afterwards was that you got three weeks of speculation.

“He should have done this, should have done that but we will never know because he didn’t say’. I trust the people around me. I don’t need to go looking for external counsel. If the tournament ended after 68 holes, people would be calling me the best golfer in the world.”

DeChambeau was pressed for comment about his epic battle with McIlroy at the 2024 US Open and whether or not he had spoken to him.

The LIV Golf star said he had a brief chat with McIlroy on the practice range at Royal Troon on Monday and it was there where the World No.2 offered his congratulations on the victory.

Bryson DeChambeau says Rory McIlroy offered his congratulations on the US Open win when bumping into him at The Open on Monday.

DeChambeau: “I said hello to him yesterday, and we talked. He said congrats. So everything’s great there.”

DeChambeau said of his interaction with McIlroy:

“I said hello to him yesterday, and we talked. He said congrats. So everything’s great there.

“He’s a fierce competitor. I know he’s going to give the fans, give everybody as much as he can this week. I’m going to be doing the same. We’re going to be competing. Hopefully it will be another good battle.”

DeChambeau is one of only two players to have recorded top-10s in the first three majors of the season.

US PGA champion Xander Schauffele is the other man.
