Xander Schauffele’s father revealed that he sent a message to LIV Golf telling him his son would only consider joining a breakaway league if there was no path back to the PGA Tour.
After winning at Royal Troon and claiming the British Open title, Xander Schauffele seems to have put aside any speculation about joining the LIV Golf Tour.
The 30-year-old American shed his “almost manly” persona in a remarkable year that saw him win his second major championship of the season in Scotland last weekend. Schauffele dominated the prestigious Claret Jug, finishing with a score of 9-under 275 to win by two strokes. Despite the lure of Saudi Arabia’s wealth, the 12-time PGA Tour champion appears unfazed by the financial incentives to join the ranks of defectors.
More recently, golf stars such as Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Lee Westwood have been lured into the PIF-backed venture. However, according to his father, the silver charm of golf liv does not seem enough to move Shaufel from his way.
In a frank discussion with Golf.com, Stefan Shaufel shared an understanding from his son’s point of view, abandoning the concept of switching. He said: Alex is not in it for the money. Alex is a legend, and in my opinion, as well as his father, we never had a chance.
What we talked about when Xander was next to me at LIV in Saudi Arabia was that if there was no chance of returning to the PGA Tour and earning points in the world rankings, there was nothing to be said. Even if you threw billions of dollars at him, this statement still applies. No wonder they call me Ogre. I keep my promises.”
Reflecting on a fantastic year in which he won the PGA Championship and then the British Open title, the ace golfer spoke of the joy he felt after his victory at Royal Troon, saying, “I’ve always dreamed of this.” “Getting up to 18th was one of the greatest feelings of my life, with the yellow in the rankings, the fans there, the standing ovation,” he added, before adding, “I got goosebumps so I had to quickly get you all together.
I’m not done yet,” and said of his performance, “the best round I’ve ever played.” It’s an incredible feeling to be here with the Claret Jug. But it’s all about results at the end of the day, and I really believe in that,” Schauffele said.
“Sometimes things go your way, and sometimes they don’t. Today I felt really in control of a lot of this…I was holding on to it feeling like I never had a chance to let it go. “All those tough losses in the past or those moments where I allowed myself to make mistakes and dream too early about the last nine, today I was able to pull myself together and make sure that didn’t happen.”
