Rory McIlroy makes claim about the greens at the St Jude Championship after playing front nine in practice round

Rory McIlroy has discussed the greens at the St Jude Championship ahead of the opening FedExCup Playoffs event.

 enters the  third in the FedExCup points list, with Scottie Scheffler in first place and Xander Schauffele in second.

But  at the St Jude, with 70 players at TPC Southwind in Memphis for the event.

It is certain to test some of the best that the game has to offer, with plenty of players fighting for a place at the BMW Championship.

The field will be cut to 50 for that competition, with the top 30 then making it to the Tour Championship at East Lake.

East Lake and indeed the BMW at the Castle Pines Golf Club also won’t be easy, but McIlroy is first focusing on TPC Southwind.

Discussing the greens at the Tennessee course in particular after a front nine practice round, McIlroy said in his : “I mean look we have been coming back to Southwind for so long that it doesn’t change much from year to year.

“You know what to expect when you get here. Bermuda, pretty grainy around the greens, very good green surfaces, some of the best greens we putt on all year.

“It’s one of these golf courses which demand a bit more precision than some of the other golf courses we play throughout the year but if you keep your ball in play and in the fairway you are always going to have a decent chance to make birdies and shoot a decent score.”

Can Rory McIlroy put his major disappointment behind him?

McIlroy does, of course, have a very recent history with greens struggles, having blown his US Open hopes with disastrous putting.

He was in contention to lift his fifth major trophy at Pinehurst earlier this summer, but lost to Bryson DeChambeau after missing two par putts within four feet in his final round.

Even though the competition took place in June, he will still be feeling the hurt, with .

But he has a superb history at the FedExCup, with his three titles more than any other player, with Tiger Woods’ two ensuring they are the only multiple winners.

World number one Scheffer is, however, the man to beat, with six PGA Tour wins and an Olympic gold medal in 2024.
