Scottie Scheffler reveals change of plan to schedule ahead of BMW Championship
Scottie Scheffler admits he will tweak his pre-tournament prep at the BMW Championship as a result of using golf carts on Monday.
Scottie Scheffler will tweak his pre-tournament prep ahead of this week’s BMW Championship on the PGA tour as a result of being able to use golf carts during practice on Monday.
Scheffler, 28, finished solo fourth at the FedEx St Jude Championship on Sunday.
It marked the FedEx Cup leader’s 11th top-five finish in a season where he has already won six times.
Scheffler is some 1,500 points clear of in the FedEx Cup standings right now.
FedEx St Jude Championship winner vaulted up to third place.
Should Scheffler remain out in front at the end of this week’s BMW Championship then he will start with a two-shot lead at the Tour Championship next week where the winner will be crowned FedEx Cup champion and earn a PGA Tour record bonus prize of $25m.
Scheffler has never won a FedEx Cup.
FedEx Cup battle: Schauffele and Scheffler
The top 50 players in the season-long FedEx Cup race head into this week’s second Playoffs event at the BMW Championship at Castle Pines Golf Club in Colorado, a new venue for the PGA Tour’s best.
Castle Pines GC will represent a slightly different test to one players are typically used to on the PGA Tour given the course plays at altitude.
As a result of the hilly climbs in the lead up to the tournament, the PGA Tour and tournament sponsors have afforded all of the players and caddies golf carts on Monday.
Scheffler confirmed Sunday night that he intends to switch up his preparation for the BMW Championship by taking his full day of practice straight away rather than waiting until Tuesday like he would normally do during a tournament week.
“We’re going to head over there tonight,” Scheffler told a pool of reporters at TPC Southwind on Sunday night.
“I heard we get golf carts tomorrow, so I’m going to enjoy that in the middle of the Playoffs.
“We’re going to go play some golf tomorrow. I’ll probably do a lighter day Tuesday and then I think we have a pro-am Wednesday.
“Typically Monday would be my light off-day.
“This week going forward with the carts on Monday, I’m going to make that my full day of practice and take a slow day on Tuesday.”
As for playing at altitude, Scheffler is relishing the test and thinks it will play to his strengths having already got a taste of it earlier this season.
“I actually played golf at altitude this summer,” said Scheffler.
“We were in Colorado. It wasn’t competitive golf, but I do remember a tournament on the Korn Ferry Tour we played at some pretty good elevation — actually two events.
“One was near Denver, the other one was in Columbia. I’ve played at elevation before.
“It has its challenges but I have a system I like to go to and it’s worked decently in the past, so hopefully it continues to work next week.”
Scheffler is a warm favourite again this week
Scheffler starts a warm 7/2 favourite for this week’s BMW Championship on the PGA Tour.
He is seeking an incredible seventh win on the PGA Tour in 2024, and an eighth overall having also won a first Olympic gold medal earlier this month.
Schauffele is next up in the betting at 7/1, fresh off a tie for second alongside at the FedEx St Jude Championship.
Hovland is the defending champion this week, albeit his two-shot victory over Scheffler last season came on a different golf course at Olympia Fields.
Record three-time FedEx Cup champion will be looking to bounce back from finishing second last at the FedEx St Jude Championship where he slumped to a 9-over par total.
McIlroy slipped from third to fifth in the FedEx Cup standings as a result of his T68.
