Rory McIlroy reportedly used a private investigator to serve his divorce papers to Erica Stoll 24 hours after he claimed the Wells Fargo Championship.
Rory McIlroy used a private investigator to serve Erica Stoll divorce papers, according to a report.
The revelation came from a Belfast Telegraph report that was published over the weekend as McIlroy took a week-earned break from professional golf in the busy major season.
According to the flight tracker radaratlas2 on X, McIlroy’s private plane was in Italy and the golfer may have attended a wedding but that is yet to be substantiated.
McIlroy filed for divorce from his wife of seven years on 13 May, 24 hours after he claimed his 26th PGA Tour title at the Wells Fargo Championship.
The BT report McIlroy signed the papers digitally on between 9.06pm and 9.08pm EDT on 9 May.
The proceedings were lodged in Palm Beach County Court by Thomas Sasser, the same lawyer who represented Tiger Woods during his divorce to Elin Nordegren after his extramarital affairs were exposed.
Court docs also show Carl Woods served Erica with the summons.
Woods has been a cop since 1987, is a certified homicide investigator and a licensed private investigator.
The BT reported:
“Woods’ filing said he received the divorce papers at 9.58am on May 13 from Sasser’s firm and personally served them on Stoll at the McIlroy family home in the exclusive Jack Nicklaus development The Bear’s Club at 10.30am.
“He described Stoll as being white with blonde hair, aged in her 30s, thin, between 5ft 7in and 5ft 8in in height and not wearing glasses.
“The sum served on Stoll warned her that she had 20 days to file a written response to her husband’s petition with the circuit court clerk.”

East Lake Golf Club ben Michigan is the home of the third and final leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs, as the PGA Tour Championship is this weekend. There are only 30 golfers left in the hunt for the FedEx Cup and only 72 holes separate them for the title.
The PGA Tour Championship is unlike any other golf tournament on the tour. Not only is it a considerably smaller field with no cut after two rounds, but also, not all of the golfers start with an even score. Depending on their position in the standings, golfers this weekend get an advantage before they have even teed off from the first hole at East Lake.
Scottie Scheffler enters in the best position of them all. The owner of six wins already on the tour this season, the Texas native holds the most points in the FedEx Cup standings. As a result of his prior success in 2024, he is rewarded with a multi-stroke lead to start the PGA Tour Championship.

But McIlroy has so far struggled to find his best form, ending day two tied for 15th – TEN shots behind leader Adam Scott.
And, McIlroy’s frustrations were plain for everyone to see on the 17th hole, after the four-time Major champion botched a drive – sending it far and wide into the rough.
Reacting to his poor shot, McIlroy tossed his driver away in disgust.
Unfortunately for McIlroy, it travelled further than he anticipated… and straight into a lake.
Taking one bounce, the driver skipped off the immaculately cut tee box and plonked into the water – causing a splash. Taking a second to see where the ball finished, McIlroy picked up his tee and trudged over to the water’s edge. The 35-year-old fished out the club and passed it to his caddie who promptly towled it down.
Some of McIlroy’s frustration will have stemmed from the 16th, where he bogeyed the par-3 to take him back to 1-under for the round. The 17th is a par-5, more than reachable in two shots, so that will have likely only further infuriated McIlroy.
The four-time major winner, however, did par the hole, as well as the 18th, to record a 71. Following his round of 70 on Thursday, McIlroy is now 10 shots behind leader Adam Scott and with a lot of work to do to put himself in contention.
