LAS VEGAS — If it’s not one thing with the Browns so far this season, it’s another.

Just when quarterback Deshaun Watson made the play Browns fans had been waiting to see, a deep strike on the run to Amari Cooper for 82 yards and a go-ahead score, a flag came out for holding on backup center Nick Harris. The play came back. The Browns eventually punted.

Regardless of your thoughts on the call, this summed up the first four games for the Browns about as well as any single moment can.

Watson still has a ways to go to get to the level the Browns need to reach their ultimate goal, but he was certainly good enough on Sunday. The protection remained an issue, and we’ll see what he does against a better defense and a better team, but there were baby steps.

While that was happening, the defense was allowing the Raiders offense to do things it hadn’t done all season. Las Vegas scored double digits in the first half for the first time and had their season-high rushing total in the game’s first 30 minutes.

This is not a particularly inspiring Raiders group, especially playing without two of their best players, edge rusher Maxx Crosby and wide receiver Davante Adams.

And yet, there was Isaiah McGuire forcing a fumble and Rodney McLeod returning it for a touchdown to pull the Browns within a score.

Then Mr. Reliable, Dustin Hopkins missed the extra point.

It’s too early to call this season over for the Browns, even at 1-3, but the first four games have given little reason to feel good about the direction things are headed, especially considering how much tougher the schedule gets from here.

To lose to this Raiders team, 20-16, makes you really wonder where this football team belongs in the hierarchy. They’ve lost to two teams no one had in the playoffs at the beginning of the year and not much has happened to change that outlook.

Now you have to start to look at how the Browns will navigate things, heading to Washington next week to face a surging Commanders team before they play the Eagles and open their division slate at home.

The Browns season is in trouble, and they need to figure it out quickly.
