Phil micklelson voted as the new Ryder cup captain as the Keegan Bradley have suspended after being accused of cheating at the BMW CHAMPIONSHIP full details
Phil Mickelson was stunned at the British Open when he found out his heartbroken LIV ace caddie had confided in a rival. That must have been a real shock for him!
The return of the British Open Championship to Royal Troon this week will bring back memories for former champions, but heartbreaking ones for Phil Mickelson. Mickelson, a six-time major winner, has only won once before, at Muirfield in 2013, but came very close again three years later at Troon in a one-on-one battle with Henrik Stenson. Mickelson started the day one shot behind Stenson but quickly took the lead with a remarkable birdie on the first hole. Despite a superb six-under par 65, he was eventually overtaken by Stenson’s incredible 63, falling three shots short of the target.
In addition to missing out on the win, Mickelson also set an unwanted record. His overall score of 267 was, at the time, the lowest ever total for a runner-up in a major championship. Eight years later, Stenson has shared that Mickelson’s caddie, Steve Loy, confided in him at the US PGA Championship, revealing that missing out on the win had haunted Mickelson. In their conversation, for the first time in his career, Mikelson acknowledged that he played very well but could not leave with the trophy. The two players were some of the historical fights and unforgettable moments in the history of discovery. Stenson acknowledges he could talk about the Open for hours, but understands Mickelson might not want to do that.
