Red Bull have been told to replace Sergio Perez with a younger Formula 1 star after his horrible Monaco Grand Prix qualifying result.

The F1 champions have struggled all weekend and their problems were not just limited to Perez. Max Verstappen could not find his rhythm during qualifying and managed to go only sixth fastest, ending his run of eight pole positions in a row.

But while the Dutchman is still in contention to score points, his Red Bull team-mate is well out of the picture. Perez failed to even make it out of Q1 and was only 18th fastest of the 20 cars on track.

After the session he explained: “It was a disaster because firstly on my lap I encountered a lot of traffic into turn six, into seven and there were some stickers laying down on the apex of eight, so I had to avoid all of that. I ended up losing a couple of tenths that would have been enough to get through.”

Mirror Sport understands Red Bull are likely to hand Perez a new deal – his current contract expires at the end of this year. And his poor performance in Monaco this weekend is highly unlikely to change the team’s plans.

But former F1 racer Johnny Herbert has seen enough to form the belief that Perez should be replaced. And he thinks Yuki Tsunoda, who has scored consistently so far this season and was eighth quickest in Monte Carlo on Saturday, should be promoted from sister team RB to replace him.

Herbert told BestPokerSites: “Perez’s performance hasn’t been good enough. The guys that are going for race wins and championships, it’s about being consistent. Max has had a bad day but he’s sixth. Sergio has had a bad day and he’s 18th, he’s 12 places back. That’s a poor showing.
